So the latest issue of SKIDMARK has been out for a month or so at this point (lagging, I know), but there is some good news for you internet viewing lurkers out there. More on that in a minute.
This issue has been hijacked by Vertical Smile Skateboards and is full cover to cover with content that has been tainted one way or another by the VS. Everyone I have ran into is really into this issue. As an added BONUS, there is a couple page special featuring the Local 209 Skaters Union!!! Pretty cool eh!

So here is the part about the good news... If you cant get ahold of one of them glossy magazines like the ones above, there is an on-line solution! I just read in Thrashers "Trash" section that Heath Kirchart (Alien Workshop) completed the long climb up El Capitan in Yosemite, CA! So after I got off the craper I ran over to the Google and found a story of the climb they did with a good set of pictures and words. I love rock climbing and it has always been a dream of mine to do this exact climb.

A while back I shot some photos while on a road trip up to Ukiah, Willets, and St. Helena. Because skateboarding is way too fun, the only photos I took were of a DIY pool with other things on the deck thats up in the cuts of Willets. We hooked up with Adam and Lincoln and spent the afternoon drinking beers and smashing ourselves into the cement with smiles on our faces!
Anyways, Confusion was interested in what I shot, so I wrote a little something and included a few photos with it, and they posted it up on their web-pag. Check it out, but dont forget to check out the other stuff too, LOST OF RAD STUFF INSIDE!!!

CONFUSION mega-ZINE?

A few weeks ago, Jonathan Hay (ex-Concussion senior editor) contacted me and asked if I had ever heard of a new magazine called Confusion. I told him I had just briefly seen a bit of info on the internet, but had not fully let it soak in. So he ended up sending over (from Germany!) issues #1 + #2. I was stoked when I saw the manella package in the mail box! Vorgebirgstrasse 19, it said on the return address... made me feel like I was getting secret spy info or something! So I opened it up and out came two issues that are the same size of your average zine, but before I even cracked one open, there was a distinct difference between Confusion and other zines. Its quality and paper. Printed on heavy glossy, it felt like a full size expensive magazine, but smaller! Once I opened them I was taken. I sat down on the couch and was drawn in by all the cool photos and great write ups that showed skating, surfing, and happenings form all over the world! Thats right, this zine is INTERNATIONAL! And yes, there is tons of coverage fro the USA too. I just think its cool to actually see what is getting skated somewhere else sometimes. Its not all black and white either (issue #1 is), there are full color spreads and clean production though out. I think if you can print a photo on a mag that is 8.5 x 11 sideways and make it look dynamic like a larger format mag... your doing something right!
I think this mag still has that Concussion spirit, but in more of a compact world traveler, vagabond type package. Its a MUST READ!
*I really should have taken better photos (these don't do it justice), but I had to get this up for ya'll to see.

On Saturday 4/2/11 I rushed out to Sunnyvale, CA to get a little skating in and meet up with old friends at the Fishbanks Skateshop 6th year Anniversary BBQ. It was a quick ride for me only having a little over 2 hours to get some skating in. Before I left the Best Trick contest was being held on the vert wall in the main bowl flow area. As expected there were a few that were just throwing down with insane maneuvers, but one has to win... and that's where Chris Henderson steps in. With his blunt kick-flip fakie, he rolled away the winner, shut down the session, and got mauled by the crowd that just had their minds blown away. Nice job Chris.

They have agreed to print some logo stickers for this blog if we just mention their shop. Go ahead and check them out, Im sure they would like that! I am going to have them do a run of the header graphic and see how they turn out. I will then post up pics of the final product when it arrives (be patient).

Yes, I know its been way too long since the last update.... but what can I say, I'm busy!
Busy making up excuses why I haven't done this, why I haven't done that.... time to stop sulking and get busy grind"n!!

First off, I got a correspondence from a business in Austin, TX called Build a Sign.com, they make stickers and banners and what not. They offered me a chance to get some stickers made up for this blog thing that I have been putting up, only if I mention their shop. I thought about it at first, and wondered about it for a while and wondered if it would be worth it, and is this really happening. So I have decided to go for it and have them do some stickers in exchange for a post-ad up on this blog. Sounds good, right? I think maybe. Look for the post-ad coming up soon.

Secondly, there is a skate mag that is working pretty hard to get some coverage and good content out to the masses. Its called SKIDMARK Skateboard Mag. Event coverage, ripping riders, and features on skate shops (that are really skate shops), are a few of the things you will find. Lots of photographers are contributing to fill the pages and they are photographers that you probably know and skate with all the time.
The latest issue has an interview with Frank Faria from Escalon, CA... This issue has two firsts that most don't know about. Frank got the cover, this is Franks first cover (first-first), I shot the photo, this is my first published cover (second-first). Pretty cool I think. Look for the cover-post coming up soon also.

To celebrate these last to points, I am going to be running a little promotion for everyone. Look for the details in the posts to follow. Lets work together.

I posted a pic of Frank doing the same thing a while back, but I was reviewing some photos and I like this one better, so there ya go. We skated The Ranch last week and since the whole got filled in, the ramp has been much faster and the sessions are heated. We will be doing some repairs on a section of the extension, making an improvement perhaps... come and check it out if you get some time.

This is a bowl that my friends made in n.oakland. I helped a little on it. Probably the first backyard DIY thing besides a wood ramp that I have skated anywhere. The top used to be red, and I have seen full stalefish fly out of the deep end... really.

I have had the chance to ride this pool a couple times and this pool is by far the raddest ever. Removable obsticals, perfect coping (no exaggeration necessary), hips that are easy to access from both ways...

Chili Bowl was super fun... til the blood in my head wanted to see what was going on too!

After resting for a couple hours in the hot sun... I drove all the way to Mammoth, CA to skate the park with Grosso, Jerry (birthday-boy), Cory, and the boys from the OC. Fell asleep probably 10-15 times, got there at 1:00am, saw a bear throw a cement trash can in front of this store in Mammoth. By then, the gash was a large scab, ready for action! Could have got 10+ staples, oh well.

A few from SF and SJ did the journey also after hearing about the idea of going all the way to Mammoth for one day. True diehards.

Just the Facts...

I got asked what the B-team was, so here is what I replied and I wanted to share with the rest of you too. Just a brief answer, no essay this time.

Just the good (and mediocre) skaters that will never be on the a-team! Mostly the blue collar anti-heros that just skate for life, skate for fun, and skate for no reason in particular. the local 209 was created a about 9 years ago by a friend and I in a bar and has no membership requirements except that you dont practice being a douche bag and you like to skate! While living in San Diego for the last two years, The B-team started a phrase because I got flowed stuff by grosso and he has a couple others like Eric Nash that get stuff too, so we became his B-Team. So I started the b-team for all my southern california friends that skated, but had no real knowlage of the 209 skaters union in Modesto. Now I have combined them and now Im back in modesto and will continue to spred the good vibes and team spirit of building the skate scene so that we keep doing what we want!

Well, I'm in the middle of moving back to Modesto from San Diego and havent found alot of time to make a post for skating... so thanks to Mike (again!) for coming though with a little content to keep this moving.

Some good news is that I am getting a 10.5 lense for my Nikon and I couldnt be happier!! I have been waiting at least 15 years to get one of these. You will see some different shots from me for sure. Cant wait!

Anyways....
There is this new zine coming out of the Central Valley called "HATE ON THIS". For issue no. 1 they have roped in an interview with The Nor-Cal Owl, Vanessa Torres. Sounds good already! Mike Hart shot the cover of VT with a frontside rock at The Ranch.

Here is the new addition at the Ranch, a mini street section... country style! It was built for the annual Raise Hell at The Ranch party. Missed it this year, but you can check out the pics (and maybe video) over at the The Ranch's web site for all the mayhem!

Mike also shot me one pic he took at the Wallenburg/Thrasher event, Im sure he has more, I guess we have to wait and see. Until then, enjoy this crowd overview with all eyes on (the winner)Chris Cole as he throws a switch frontside flip down one of the most famous stair sets in the history of skateboarding.
Maybe he has a pic of Lizard King and his bs 180 one foot... that would be rad!

My daughter gave me three different rolls of 35mm film for my birthday. What an awesome choice of gifts. It makes the Vintage-ness creep back into my skin and make me remember about the first (used)camera I bought... just to take snaps of skateboarding.
So I put the digital away and picked up the N90 for the weekend. Well, needless to say, after a rad weekend and some good fun behind the ol' reflex mirror, the N90 is ride'n shotgun with the digi.. back in the bag at the ready.

Two years ago this happened...

So, yesterday we went out and had a picnic in the hills between Poway and Ramona. Perfect day for it, not hot at all. Yes, Katie is pregnant! About 16 weeks into it.

So later we drove up to Julian and had dinner and stopped by a little hole in the wall nick nack shop and found the babies first piece of gear! Oh, its a girl too. We found out last week. Goovy!

Got to see some good friends and skate with a few of them on my big trip up to the NOR. Here are a couple pics,

This is Gene's first FSG over a death box, ever!!! Way to go dude!! I was still calling "bullshit" because I have know'n him for a long time and he is a pretty gnarly skater, and when he said he hadn't grinded a box before, I didn't believe him. Either way, it was still RAD!

Went to The Ranch to skate with Frank and there was a huge session, BBQ, and beer fest already going on! Benji was there too! It was a great time but as always I spent more time skating than standing around with the camera in my hand... so all i got was a couple snaps. Ryan Carpenter was so excited to show me his new inverts that by the time I had situated a good shot he zipped out on one of the landings and smacked his head... concussion... visit to the ER. He's OK now, but he had no clue where he was right after it happend! Dink has a way better shot, I will try and get him to send it my way so I can post it up.

I know, its been a long time since I have put up anything new, but I have a good excuse for that. LOTS OF WORK!!!! Been busy driving up and down the state for work. Fire season is about to get going and everybody wants to make sure their fire truck is in tip-top shape. Also spent a week in Sacramento at the Fire Mechanics Academy getting my state cert. for Advanced Electrical for emergency vehicles. Put about 4000 miles on the work truck in the last couple weeks. It sucks because it has really cut into my skating time.
But on the other hand I know alot of people that dont even have a job right now and are hurt'n for some funds... so I welcome the work with open arms no matter how far and time consuming it may be.

The good news is, when I did get to skate... I gots some pics to share with all of you.

This was one of the highlights of ASR for me. We went to Dicks Last Resort in San Diego on 5th St. for lunch and got the shitiest service! Ended up going up to Fresno over the weekend and skated their new bike park and a few pools. Sorry Brad for not being able to meet with ya, I wasnt driving. Next time.
This is all I can share for now, myself in the "super taco".

Word is that this place is going to be a BIKE only park. Everything there was built with steroids and is super fun. The way a park is supposed to be built. But, even so, Fresno has plans to build a shit load of parks over the next year. Mostly pools! I dont think that will stop all the back yard sampling.

This was a couple years back at a pool that was only good for a couple lines, so we harvested all the coping for our ramp. Winter time is good for doing all the grunt work because otherwise you would be to busy skating.

Oceanside is a really fun new park, but watch out for the crowd factor! Its insane when there is more than 20 people in the whole park.

Today I went to the dentist to get 4 cavities filled for the first time ever. WOW, what an experience! I took my pod and listened to 2 hours of AC-DC while I was getting drilled. Felt like the right thing to listen to at the time. The whole time I was laughing inside because there were two gals jamming all kinds of metal shit in my mouth and I was all numbed up and couldn't feel much of anything. On top of that, half the time the main surgin had her tit planted on my forehead while grinding away at my decay! Totaly weird.

Road Trip Time...

The little lady and I are going on a long needed road trip. Some camping in the dessert, Las Vegas for New Years, and a stop at the Hoover Dam on the way to the Grand Canyon.

Lincoln is one bad ass skater. Not just a pool skater, but a rad vert skater too. I first met him skating vert with another guy named Mark. (Mark had "Bastard" tattoo'd on his throat!) Shortly after that the Vagabond started up and Fresno was never the same!

He landed this first try on his board and broke off the tail on the landing, so I let him use my deck while I shot these photos and he got two more in a row. Way sick.

Never tried them over the stairs of a pool, but at Brads Bowl the flat bottom works just fine. They are fun but I try not to do these very often because they hurt the hell out of my wrist!
